When choosing a fragrance, whether as part of a fragrance gift set or not, have you ever been confused by the way the perfume is described? When you look at fragrance products you may see other labels used such as Eau de Toilette, or Eau de Cologne in place of perfume. This confusion probably stems from our love to simplify things. When talking about fragrances, this refers to how pure the content is. Let’s look at the different types.

Perfume extract. It represents the purest form of fragrance that money can buy. It contains typically 20% (but can be anywhere between 15 and 40%). And of course that means you will pay the highest price for it. The are the purest extract that you can buy, with the strongest scent. The scent will also be longer lasting than the other fragrance types. Be careful not to confuse  with Eau de Parfum, which is typically still strong but at a lesser concentration than perfume, which is limited to 10 – 20% (typically 15%) aromatic compounds.

Eau de Toilette. This type of fragrance typically employs 10% (although it can be n the range of 5 – 15%) aromoatic compounds. It is at a price kinder to the pocket while providing a strong scent. Eau de Toilette matches needs with budget.

Eau de Cologne. At the budget end, it contains 3 – 8% aromoatic compounds (typically 5%). The intensity of the scent is not as high as that of perfume or Eau de Toilette. The duration of the scent will be shorter also. Eau de Cologne is typically used to label those fragrances lacking in base notes.

For use on people that just want to freshen up lightly immediately following a wash or shave, there are splash or aftershaves. These contain the smallest concentration at 1-3%. Again great gifts for the adolescent teen in their early years.

Consider these things when considering perfume gift sets. When buying for someone close to you, perfume is a great option. For someone that is special to you, buy Eau de Parfum. You may wish to purchase Eau de Cologne in particular for adolescents in their early teens fragrance gift set.
